Problem
Statement

Teaching mostly comprises if activities where children are asked to learn only by listening or by visual information. It can make learning difficult and children are not able to sustain their attention on the tasks.

Maths

A challenging subject

Child will develop their counting and calculation skills, learning different ways to multiply and divide. They will also extend their understanding of fractions. They will measure length, weight, volume, temperature, time and money, discover more about 2D and 3D shapes, and begin to learn about statistics.

They’ll count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10 and learn number bonds to 20. They’ll partition numbers into 10s and 1s to add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers. They will be taught the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and how to find 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 3/4 of quantities and shapes.

Much of their learning will come from exploring with objects to solve problems practically and there are simple things you can do at home to support their development.

Ideation

Concept-
Designing a multisensory game to teach kids arithmatic operations of addition and subtraction.

Story-
Game is based on the story of minions adventure to capture the moon. It can be played by 2 players, in which one will get a yellow minion and other a violet one and they will race to the moon by solving operations of addition and subtraction.

It also contains auditory feature, where when the child places the pawn on a particular block it spells out the word that the visual represents, helping children in naming the objects.

Game Play-
Players have to start by rolling the operation die, then roll the normal die. If the operation die says addition and the normal die say the number 3, then the player has to move up 3 spaces.
The first one to reach the moon wins.

Testing

Drawbacks

  • Dice: Equal number of addition and subtraction signs made it difficult to progress.

  • Gameplay: Lack of obstacles and interesting elements made it boring and unrewarding.

Possible Solution

  • Dice: Reduce the probability of rolling subtraction signs.

  • Gameplay: Introduce obstacles and challenges along the path to increase engagement and satisfaction.

What does the game contains?

1. A board that contains a path which leads to the moon.

2. Pawns of minions, purple and yellow, one that completes the race first wins.

 3. Two dices, one regular dice and one with operations of plus-minus embeded on it.

4. A spin wheel.

Gameplay

Objective

Players have to start by rolling the operation die, then roll the normal die. If the operation die says addition and the normal die say the number 3, then the player has to move up 3 spaces.

If the players land on the icon of spin wheel, they will have to spin the wheel and do what the spin says.

There is one long cut and one short cut in betwwen the path, and the players will get to through it when they land on the space where it starts.

First one to reach the moon wins.

Objective of the game is to help kids understand the concepts of arethmatic operations in a fun way. Using multiple senses will help to improve children’s
learning and engagement.
